Religious Education

RE (Religious Education) is taught as part of the basic curriculum of Richmond Church of England Primary School. We teach Religious Education according to the aims of the North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus.

Through their work in RE children explore, analyse and reflect on a range of religious and non-religious responses to basic human questions of meaning and purpose. RE can help children to know about and understand the religious beliefs, values, experiences, practices and traditions by which people live and make sense of their shared human experience. It also enables children to examine and draw upon their own experience through reflection and response.

Religious Education will be taught in a way that engages pupils in a variety of activities appropriate to their age, ability and previous experience. Wherever possible the children will have the opportunity to learn through exploring and experiencing places of worship, meeting and talking to visitors, handling religious artefacts, painting and writings, and through research. Children are given the opportunity to reflect on religion through exploring and expressing personal values, experiencing stillness, evaluating their experiences and discoveries, expressing their ideas with confidence and sensitivity and developing appropriate responses when encountering other people’s beliefs. Children record their learning and experiences in a variety of ways, such as through drama, art, music or in writing.

The children’s learning is regularly supported by the use of story sacks and resource bags from the Ripon Resource Centre for RE.

At Richmond Church of England Primary School we are very proud of our Church School foundation. We have many links with the church community both in Richmond itself and further afield in the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales and we all enjoy the many benefits that the children can gain from these links.

Collective Worship

Collective Worship plays a central part in our school’s life. It is the time in the day when the whole school, key stages, year groups or individual classes meet to share in worship, in each other’s joys, ideals and achievements, as well as sharing times of disappointment and sadness.

Collective Worship is conducted in a dignified and respectful way which encourages children to be reflective and discover a meaning in their lives. It is a quiet, special time which aims to strengthen the sense of community and belonging and affirms the values, ideals and ethos of our school. It provides a peaceful, reflective time together and space from the hectic school day for both children and staff.

Collective Worship may be led by members of staff, members of the local clergy, visitors or by the children themselves.

Parents who wish their child to be withdrawn from Collective Worship or Church Services are requested to make their wishes known, in writing to the Head Teacher.
